St Joseph's take new title
THE inaugural Ulster Bank Co. Derry Vocational Schools U-16 B' Gaelic Football competition came to an exciting finale on Tuesday when local rivals Dominican College and St Joseph's College played at Owen Roe's new grounds at Cappaghmore.
Dominican came into this game with mixed league for, while St Joseph’s recent wins over Oakgrove and St Brigid’s Derry left them needing this win to secure the title.
The game began at a fast pace with both sides clearly intent on attacking football. The large expanse of the pitch suited both sets of forwards.
The first score of the game came through St Joseph’s captain Vinny Heneghan who pointed from 20 metres following a foul on Michael Mullan.
This was quickly responded to when, on Dominican’s next attack, Duffy secured the ball from the kick-out and put Lazar Zravkovk through for the first goal of the game.
St Joseph’s tried to raise the intensity and was nearly rewarded when Pierschalski had a shot well stopped by Corbett in goals.
Douglas next hammered the ball off the upright with the goalkeeper beaten. The long kick out of experienced keeper, Corbett, caused St Joseph’s many problems around midfield and with Ciaran Duffy, Adam Kerr and
Tiarnan Quinn picking up valuable Dominican possession they piled constant pressure on the opposition defence.
At this mid point in the first half such was the dominance of Loughrey and Duffy in the Dominican midfield sector that St Joseph’s were only spared by some very wayward shooting by the Portstewart forwards.
Against the breeze St Joseph’s began to get a grip on the game and with a growing share of possession the forwards began to concentrate on point scoring instead of goals.
This brought immediate rewards through Frizelle (2), Doherty, Pierzchalski and M. Mullan. Dominican ended the half with points from Owens (2), McQuillan, Higgins and Zravkovk to leave the half time score: St Joseph’s 0-6, Dominican 1-5.
Within minutes of the restart St Joseph’s had the ball in the Dominican net following strong defensive play from Leonard and centre-half back Rory Kerr, whose strong run and lay-off set Ryan Doherty in the clear to goal.
This score and the assistance of the breeze raised the tempo of the St Joseph’s play.
With half backs and midfield driving forward the Dominican defence was now under constant pressure.
Despite heroic efforts by fullbacks Mullan and Mooney, the siege was rewarded when Douglas scored another St Joseph’s goal.
Higgins and Gorham managed two late points for Dominican but with further St Joseph’s points through Heneghan, Mullan, Doherty and Morgan, the title was on its way to Coleraine with the final score: St Joseph’s 2-10, Dominican 1-7.
