YORK HALL STROLL FOR CLASSY CARL
TARGET PRACTICE: Carl Frampton lands a blow on Kris Hughes
Carl Frampton turned on the style at the York Hall on Saturday night.
The Jackal successfully defended his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title with an impressive seventh-round stoppage of Kris Hughes.
The Belfast fighter controlled the contest from the start and was never threatened by Hughes who was outgunned and out-boxed from the first bell.
Frampton floored Hughes with a powerful right hook early in the seventh and the Scotsman was deemed unfit to continue after struggling to his feet.
“Hughes was tough but I’m happy with my performance,” said Frampton.
“It took something spectacular to get rid of him and I delivered.
“I was told to take my time and up my pace when I felt like it.
“Sometimes I like to pick my shots and hurt opponents and that’s what I did in this fight.”
And Frampton, who looks set to fight in New York on St Patrick’s Day, paid tribute to Hughes.
He was very tough, he took a lot of hard shots from the start.
“After about two rounds I was sinking some body shots into him but he stood up to it well.
“ I’m happy with the performance.
“I was going to take my time and up the pace when I felt like it and I trained very hard for this and knew I could do 12 rounds flat out.
“I threw the right hand a few seconds before that just missed, I decided to throw it again and it was a perfect shot – I don’t think anyone would have stood up to that.”
Manager Barry McGuigan was delighted after watching his fighter dismantle Hughes.
“Carl was fantastic. I have been telling you guys for ages that he is outstanding. He is a frightening puncher as he proved tonight,” he said.
“I was shouting at him to get him out of there but he does things his way. He creeps up on guys and then punishes them.
“He has everything in his locker and he was excellent tonight.
“He is not the finished article and there is work to be done. But he is getting better the whole time
“And the better the fighter, the better he will box.”
