Ports crash out of competition
Bohemians' Adam Martin celebrates scoring against Portadown
Portadown’s Setanta Cup campaign ended last night with battling Bohemians securing a 1-0 victory – 3-1 on aggregate – at Shamrock Park, WRITES VICTOR GORDON.
The damage was done 10 minutes from time when big centre-half Adam Martin flicked home from close-in following a Keith Ward free-kick.
Portadown had their chances but found Bohs’ keeper Craig Sexton in top form, and they also had a couple kicked off the line.
Portadown sprang to life with Bohs’ keeper Sexton saving brilliantly from a Kevin Braniff free-kick, and fellow striker Matthew Tipton swept the rebound inches over.
Bohs’ striker Dinny Corcoran missed his second sitter of the night after just a minute into the second half when he was brilliantly sent through by Keith Ward but he managed to blast over the top when it would have been much easier to score.
Portadown came close on the hour when Sexton brilliantly turned away a deflected shot from Jamie Tomelty, and then Peter McMahon hoofed a superb effort by Braniff off the line.
Then Martin settled the issue when he flicked home a beautifully flighted free-kick from Keith Ward.
