Rory McIlroy proved his status as the best golfer in the world with a blistering display at The Barclays on Friday.

After labouring to an opening round of three-over-par on Thursday, the Northern Irish star bounced right back to form with a superb six-under-par second round.

It leaves McIlroy on four-under going into the weekend – and just four shots off joint leaders Cameron Tringale and Adam Scott.

McIlroy picked up three birdies on the front nine, with successive birdies at the 12th and 13th bolstering his impressive round.

Another birdie arrived at the 17th as he completed his round without dropping a shot.

Fellow Northern Ireland star Graeme McDowell also enjoyed a profitable day at Ridgewood Country Club, posting a second round score of three-under-par to reach the halfway stage on four-under – four off the lead.

McDowell had five birdies and two bogeys on the front nine.

He then bogeyed the 11th before picking up a shot on the 17th.

Meanwhile, Gareth Maybin made the cut by one shot at the Czech Masters in Prague after carding two level-par rounds of 72.

The 33-year-old from Ballyclare is tied for 65th after a second round which included three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.
