Rory McIlroy is leading the Open Championship at the halfway stage after finishing his second round on Friday.

McIlroy hit a second successive round of 66 to move to 12 under par.

He now leads Dustin Johnson by four shots, while Portrush’s Graeme McDowell hit a three-under-par round of 69 to end the day on one under par overall.

McIlroy said after his second round: “I had a shaky start with a bogey at the start but settled in and just played really well.

“Bogeying the first, I think I had 85 yards to the pin for my second shot, it wasn’t the best start but I knew I was playing well and was just telling myself to stick to my gameplan and do what I can do,” he added.

Meanwhile, Darren Clarke enjoyed another solid day as he recorded back-to-back rounds of level par.

Clarke sits tied for 31st after two rounds at Hoylake and progresses into the weekend.

Michael Hoey won’t feature on Saturday or Sunday after he was forced to retire with a foot injury on Friday.
