ALL IRELAND RUGBY: Nenagh boost promotion chances with victory over Queen's University

Queen’s suffered a disappoint home defeat against promotion chasing Nenagh Ormond in Ulster Bank Division 2A.

The students took the lead after three minutes with a superb solo effort from winger Mark Gordon.

He broke from his own half putting a grubber kick behind the last two defenders and had enough pace to win the foot race and touch down with Ali Wright converting.

The scores were tied after 15 minutes, following their first sustained period of pressure in the Queen’s 22 the Nenagh forwards worked the ball through a series of phases before No8 Lemaki Vaipulu powered over from close range and out half Michael Walsh converted.

Queen’s regained the lead four minutes later, Nenagh prop John Hayes was yellowed cared for a high tackle on flanker Josh Atkinson and Wright slotted over the resulting penalty from in front of the posts.

The students got their second try on 33 minutes, prop Brian Cunningham made a break through midfield the ball was recycled and flaker Paddy Marks showed great strength to go over from five metres and Wright converted.

Nenagh responded immediately when they found a gap in the home defence and prop Fergal Brislane rumbled over from close range with Walsh converting.

Wright added a penalty for the students but it was Nenagh that went into the break with the lead.

Again Queen’s failed to secure the kick off and the Nenagh forwards made the hard years before centre Derek Corcoran exploited a gap in the home defence to go under the posts and Walsh’s conversion gave the Munster side a 21-20 at the interval.

Nenagh got their bonus point try six minutes after the restart the forwards rumbled up the middle creating and overlap the ball was moved through the hands and hooker Peter O’Connor went over in the corner with Walsh converting.

Nenagh’s fifth try was a carbon copy of the fourth with the pack punching through before spinning it wide for scrum half Mike Fogarty to finish off.

Derek Corcoran got his second try when he went picked a great line to go over from the 10 metre line unopposed.

Queen’s got a late consolation try through replacement hooker Scott Finlay.
