Jared Payne included in Ulster team to face Glasgow

Ulster fullback Jared Payne

Ulster fullback Jared Payne

  • by Richard Mulligan

Jared Payne has been passed fit to face Glasgow in Ulster’s crunch Pool Four Heineken Cup match on Friday ngiht at Ravenhill (kick-off 8pm).

The fullback has been troubled with a groin strain over the past couple of weeks, but is named in a starting lineup which shows several changes from the team which defeated Scarlets 47-17 last week in Belfast keep Ulster top of the PRO12

Dan Tuohy is ruled out with injury, and was also expected to miss next week’s final group game away to Castres.

Rory Best, Iain Henderson and Paddy Wallace all return to the starting line-up.

Andrew Trimble, who made his 50th appearance in the European competition in last month’s home defeat to Northampton Saints will make will his 150th Ulster cap on Friday night.

Ulster lead Pool Four by three points from Castres, with Northampton a further two points behind.

A bonus point win for Ulster and a Saints win over Castres, with neither side getting bonus points, would ensure Ulster finished as group winners. However, they would still need to win in France to leave themselves with a chance of qualifying as one of the top four seeds for the last eight and guaranteeing a home draw in the quarter-finals.

ULSTER (v Glasgow)

Payne, Trimble, Cave, Wallace, Gilroy, Jackson, Pienaar; Court, Best, Afoa, Stevenson, Henderson, Diack, Henry, Williams

Replacements: Herring, Black, Fitzpatrick, McComb, Wilson, P Marshall, M Allen, C Cochrane.
