British Lion hooker, Rory Best will see a specialist on Monday when both he and Ulster will know if he will be available to face Montpellier in Friday night’s Heineken Cup Pool Five match at Ravenhill.

Best has been out of action since fracturing a bone in his right arm during Ireland’s loss to New Zealand on November 24

He scored a try in the match in the Aviva Stadium match, but shortly afterwards was forced to retire after sustaining the injury which required surgery two days later.

Best had always targeted a return to playing by mid January, but it had been thought the first of the final two pool games in Europe would be a week too soon.

A more realistic aim would have been the away clash against Leicester Tigers in what could still be a potential decider between the clubs to see who takes first place in the group.

The 31-year-old international hooker had a successful operation on the arm following the narrow loss to the All Blacks.

The News Letter understands he is to see his specialist on Monday when a decision will be taken on a return to playing.

Meanwhile, Ulster head coach Mark Anscombe, expects captain Johann Muller to be given the all clear after suffering a calf injury in training which ruled him out of Friday night’s RaboDirect PRO12 29-19 over league leaders, Munster at Ravenhill.
