Scott Rankin and Declan Reed will be favourites for Wednesday night’s Bay Road 5K Race in Londonderry which is expected to attract upwards of 150 competitors.

The event is the first round of the Furey Insurances Series and includes Athletics NI 5K Championships.

Reed from the City of Derry Club won the race last year. The Irish Masters champion came fourth in the Omagh Half Marathon last month and will go close again.

Rankin, from Foyle Valley, came third in both the Queen’s 5K and Titanic 10K. He has already won over tonight’s distance in the St Patrick’s race at Gransha and could complete a double.

Emmet McGinty, Richard Johnston, Paul McCafferty, Neil Johnston and Colin Roberts will also go well while there is a possibility that Northern Ireland Masters champion Stephen Duncan will make the trip.

Team wise City of Derry should retain their title ahead of Foyle Valley and Omagh.

Last year’s overall series winner Gemma Turley from Springwell came second at Bay Road last time behind Catherine Whoriskey and is expected to be prominent again along with Omagh girls Michelle Sturm and Julie Butler.

The flying Lifford pair Ann Marie McGlynn and Natasha Adams who dominated the placings at Queen’s and Titanic may fancy a quick return to the rostrum and will be favourites.

In the team competition Lifford with Claire McGuigan joining the top two can take the honours from holders Omagh and City of Derry.

The race headquarters are at Da Vincis Hotel car park. The action over the fast three laps course starts at Bay Road Park at 7.30pm. There is also a kids 1K fun run.
