EUROPEAN captain Jose Maria Olzabal dedicated last night’s astounding Ryder Cup victory to great friend Seve Ballesteros.

Martin Kaymer sank the decisive putt on the 18th green against Steve Stricker as Europe went on to record a 14-and-a-half to 13-and-a-half win against USA.

Europe were four behind before yesterday’s singles at Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

Olazabal’s side gained early momentum as they racked up the points – including an impressive win from Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy – to retain their crown.

Reflecting on an amazing day’s play, Olazabal admitted it was a roller coaster of emotions.

“It was very hard. When I saw we had a chance in the afternoon I started to get very emotional,” Olazabal said.

“I started to think that possibly we could win this. The boys did an unbelievable job today. And as the day went on I started to think about my friend Seve – this one is for him.

“I had words with Seve today and we came good.”

Holywood sensation McIlroy – who almost missed his singles match after getting confused by American time zones – added: “This is one of the most perfect days on a golf course. We wanted to lead from the front and get points on the board, and we did that.

McIlroy dedicated the win to Ryder Cup legend Ballesteros – who died in May last year after a long battle with cancer - and current captain Olazabal.

“This is for the two of them. We knew how much it meant for Olly to win this.

“Also for Seve who no doubt is looking down on us.”
