The Belfast Giants were involved in two one-goal road games at the weekend coming out on top 3-2 against the Hull Stingrays last night after losing by the same score line to the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday.
The victory saw Paul Adey’s side join the Panthers and Coventry Blaze on eight points and in a tie for second place in the Elite League, two points behind early pacesetters Dundee Stars.
For most of the game in Hull it looked like the Giants would skate away with a hard fought but ultimately comfortable victory as they took a 2-0 lead into the final period.
After killing an early 5-on-3 powerplay, Kevin Saurette opened the scoring at 15:09 as the Giants capitalized on a man advantage of their own.
At 25:52, again on the powerplay, Jeffrey Szwez and Colin Shields assisted on Dustin Whitecotton’s strike that made it 2-0 heading into the third period.
At 42:38, with Giants defenceman Cody Brookwell in the box, Jereme Tendler struck to half the deficit before Derek Campbell tied at 2-2.
A late interference call on Kyle Mariani saw the Giants powerplay click for the third time in the game as Calvin Elfring fired home what proved to be the game winner.
Saturday night’s clash with the defending league champions could have gone either way but it was the Panthers that came out on top with a 3-2 success.
