Andrew Wright produced a controlled exhibition of running to retain his senior boys title at the County Down Schools Cross Country Championships at Delamont Country Park.
Wright, from Grosvenor, was in a group of four for the first half of the race along with Harry Speers of Sullivan, Conall Mullan of St Malachy’s Castlewellan and reigning intermediate champion Patrick Sheridan of St Patrick’s Downpatrick.
Wright raised the pace in the second half of the 6,000 metres to come home well clear of Sheridan, Mullan and his team-mate Paul Pruzina.
Katie Moore from Bloomfield had a comfortable win in the senior girls as did Amando Banisile of Priory in the inter boys after facing a determined late challenge from Craig McMeechan of Bangor Grammar.
The inter girls was a thriller as Lois Hagen of Wellington retained her title after a six-girl battle with Anna Welch Our Lady’s, Emma Watson Strathearn, Emma Laverty Sacred Heart, Laura Gardener St Mary’s and Rebekah Nixon Banbridge Academy.
Strathearn struck triple gold with Murphy Miller in the minis, Olivia Nelson who took the minors from Mollie Brown of Glenlola and Jessica Leeman in juniors.
