“I’VE been singing Christmas carols since August,” says Northern Ireland’s own West End singer par excellence Peter Corry, whose annual festive Music Box show is always such a hit with local audiences.
This year, as usual, the show will feature a wealth of young singing and dancing talent - including a troupe of miniature ballet dancers - some of them as young as seven, alongside a sizeable adult cast that includes a West End contingent of singers - Corry, of course, Jeff Anderson (who distinguished himself on the TV search for Jesus Christ Superstar) and Linda John-Pierre - veteran of London and Broadway musical theatre.
“One of the things I love most about doing this show is that it gives so many young people the opportunity to sing or perform in a high quality production and people just love seeing them on stage,” says Peter.
Corry confides that he is usually exhausted when Christmas arrives, since rehearsals begin in the summertime. “There are so many components involved in a show like this and it’s a lot of work putting it together, so there we are in August singing carols. A lot of the music here is arranged from scratch for the show, alongside all the traditional Christmas carols of course.
“This year we have twice as many ballet dancers as previously, three times the number of choir boys - a 100-strong cast - so it’s a big, joyous festive production and it’s a real labour of love for me. It’s a really family-friendly, hugely entertaining show.”
Corry himself will sing six numbers, of which a song called Some Children See Him is his avowed favourite.
Surely Peter is feeling immensely festive now, then, having been up to speed with his carols since August?
“Well we do have the tree up at home but we haven’t got any decorations on it yet,” he laughs. “Now at least I can justify singing O Come All Ye Faithful all the time without people assuming I’m mad!”
