This summer is heating up to be a supersonic one in the city as Belsonic and Tennent’s Vital music festivals approach.
Belsonic, which was launched in 2008, is held at Belfast’s Custom House Square and this year, as usual, will feature a string of much-loved acts encompassing an eclectic range of genres.
Belsonic’s kudos has already been proved over several hugely cool and packed-out line-ups that have featured Florence + The Machine, Tom Jones, Kasabian, Nine Inch Nails, 30 Seconds to Mars and Paolo Nutini.
Dance prodigy Example (aka Elliot Gleave) will headline the festival on August 12 following two sold-out British arena tours and a brand new LP ready for release - Live Life Living, while Kids Again, the second single from the latest LP, has already had everyone grooving.
Meanwhile Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro will take to the stage at Custom House Square on August 17 with support from Twin Atlantic and Little Matador.
Biffy Clyro hail from Ayreshire and have delivered five albums of abrasive, youthful rock exuberance full of addictively anthemic moments.
August 18 sees Irish rockers Kodaline, indie troubador Tom Odell, Black Rivers and Daniel James perform.
Kodaline have enjoyed a remarkably fast rise to fame culminating in a sold out show at Dublin’s O2 Arena earlier this year. Debut LP In A Perfect World features High Hopes and Love Like This - two of the biggest singles released by an Irish act in recent years. Kodaline are joined by Brit award winning singer/songwriter Tom Odell, whose debut LP Long Way Down shot straight to number one in the UK charts.
Disco godfathers Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, who recently collaborated with Daft Punk, will perform on August 19. Nile Rodgers has written, produced and played on huge pop moments like Good Times and Le Freak as well as writing and producing biggest selling albums for Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. August 20 sees Queens of the Stone Age, Brody Dalle and The Minutes entertain the audience at Custom House Square.
One of the most critically acclaimed rock acts of all time, Queens of the Stone Age enjoyed arguably their most successful year to date with the release of seventh studio album ‘....Like Clockwork’ and an arena tour of the UK and Europe. The new album, which features collaborations with a diverse selection of artists ranging from Dave Grohl and Alex Turner to Trent Reznor and Elton John is widely considered the band’s best since the game changing Songs For The Deaf in 2002.
And as if all this weren’t enough, Las Vegas based quartet Imagine Dragons will perform on August 22, bringing Belsonic to a close. The rock-pop group were nominated for a Grammy for debut Night Visions and one of their biggest selling UK singles of last year, Radioactive.
If none of the Belsonic acts appeal, fear not, because this year’s Tennent’s Vital at Boucher Playing Fields, Belfast is also certain to be a huge draw for music lovers.
On Thursday August 21 Las Vegas-bred rock-pop maestros The Killers will headline with support from hot British act Bastille, whose star is firmly on the ascent.
One of the biggest bands in the world, The Killers have sold over 20 million albums, headlined festivals across the globe, performed at the White House and acquired a huge following. Frontman Brandon Flowers is a consummate rock pro and the crowds are certain to go wild. Each of The Killers four albums have topped the UK charts and their epic, synth-driven brand of rock boasts incredible energy and vim. The band first played Vital in 2007 and the stage is now set for their return.
Dance guru, producer and superstar DJ David Guetta, who has collaborated with some of the biggest stars on the planet and is one of the biggest names in the dance genre, having enjoyed a slew of top ten hits, will headline on Sunday August 24. He will be joined by fellow dance music icon Steve Angello, a pioneer of the Stockholm underground, and together they will bring the good vibes of some of the world’s biggest superclubs to Belfast.
