Limavady schoolgirl Rachael O’Connor has battled through to the next round of BBC talent show The Voice UK after performing a blistering rendition of the Jay-Z song Holy Grail.

The 17-year-old songstress was chosen by pop star Kylie Minogue over fellow team-mate Amelia O’Connell during the show’s battle round.

She will now be up against Belfast woman Jai McConnell in the knockout rounds this weekend.

The Limavady Grammar pupil said, however, she had not been expecting to get through – having never heard of the song given to her by Kylie.

“I just panicked. I thought, ‘I don’t know how to rap’,” she told the Derry Journal. “I’d never heard the song at all but Amelia knew it, so I thought she had the edge on me.”

Once the girls were given the song, they were given just five minutes to learn what they could before first performing it in front of their mentor.

“It was nerve-racking,” said Rachael, “but Kylie is lovely, and so helpful. And we got to work on the song for another week before we recorded the battle round.”

During the week’s rehearsals she became very friendly with Amelia, so she said winning the round had a bitter-sweet element to it.
