Northern Ireland edition of Sunday Independent being axed

The Northern Ireland edition of the Sunday Independent newspapers is being axed just one year after being launched.

The paper’s owner MediaHuis, which also publishes the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life, said the final northern edition will be printed this Sunday, however, the Sunday Independent will continue to be sold at newsagents across Northern Ireland.

MediaHuis, Belgian-owned company, said that the decision to cease production is not expected to lead to any redundancies at this stage.

The axing of the NI edition following the closure of the company’s printing facility in Newry.

It is understood t hat site is due to be be vacated by the end of this year.

A MediaHuis spokesperson said: "The last edition of the separate Northern Ireland edition will be published on December 18 .”

The NI edition was first published on October 17, 2021.
