Ulster Irish are denied their right to national freedom

Morning View ('˜Voters have put their trust in the DUP to resist SF intransigence,' February 12) stated, '... within republicanism all considerations are secondary to the ultimate goal of Irish unity'.

Within unionism, of course, all considerations are secondary to preserving freedom from Irish unity.

As the Belfast Agreement puts it, “While a substantial section of the people in Northern Ireland share the legitimate wish of a majority of the people of the island of Ireland for a united Ireland, the present wish of a majority of the people of Northern Ireland, freely exercised and legitimate, is to maintain the Union”.

In short, the Ulster British freely exercise their legitimate wish for unity with their fellow British in Great Britain.

In the process, the Ulster Irish are denied their right to national freedom.
