Fashion. It’s an ever-changing subject, something many of us struggle to keep up with.

What should we be wearing? Are we dressing too young or old for our age? Do I look ridiculous in this new outfit?

Thankfully, there always seems to be a TV programme around that can answer such concerns and queries.

Once upon a time there was The Clothes Show, then in the early years of the 21st century we turned to Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine for advice in What Not to Wear, during which they offered makeovers to people lacking in confidence. They were straight-talking, and their results were often impressive.

And then along came Gok Wan, who originally dared people to bare all in How to Look Good Naked (he recently returned to the format on the Really channel) before presenting Gok’s Fashion Fix, in which he revamped outmoded wardrobes.

Now Rylan Clark-Neal is getting in on the act with this new series, which was originally meant to air in March, but was put on hold when the lockdown began. Perhaps the BBC is hoping to encourage people to splash some cash on clothing ahead of non-essential shops reopening next week.

Clark-Neal says: “I’m thrilled to be fronting a new series on BBC One, and can’t wait to help people from all walks of life find their sense of style and be proud of what they see when they look in the mirror,” says Clark-Neal.

Ana De Moraes, the show’s executive producer, adds: “We are incredibly excited with the opportunity to bring a new fashion makeover to BBC One. This series has a unique mix of humour, emotion and consumer take out and Rylan is such a joy at the heart of proceedings.”

Each episode takes place in a shop dubbed the ‘department store of dreams’, which throws open its doors to four customers, each one desperate for a fashion fix. The idea is they will receive a makeover from one of five stylists, which will match what they look like with their true personalities.

The stylists are Darren Kennedy, a columnist who loves classic tailoring and believes he can make anyone feel chic; Joey Bevan, a fashion designer who enjoys pushing boundaries; Kat Farmer, a style blogger who knows everything there is to know about the high street; Lucie Clifford, a stylist specialising in dressing any shape or size and, finally, Nana Acheampong, who regularly works with celebrities and loves glamour and bling.

After hearing the stories of those taking part, they choose which of them is best suited to helping before coming up with three key looks. The remaining experts get the opportunity to say whether they agree or would do something differently.

Those watching at home shouldn’t feel left out either because there are plenty of tips and advice the rest of the nation can adopt. The opening episode assists two people at opposite ends of the scale – 6ft 5in Chris and 5ft 3in Manny, who need advice for very different reasons. Also receiving help are a PE teacher and a warehouse worker who want to separate their day clothes from their evening wear.
