Money, as Simply Red once reminded us, is too tight to mention. Like the savings jar at the start of Pixar classic Up, your cash stash has probably been raided more times than the fridge over the past few months.

And while we try to stay positive, there’s no denying that Covid has taken a massive financial toll on everyone who was already struggling to make ends meet.

However, if you are lucky enough to have a few quid put by, you don’t need to be a financial guru to know that this is an awful time to be a saver.

With some companies offering a pittance of a gross after a tempting 12-month fixed rate bonus, there’s little wonder Martin Lewis is urging folks to move their savings rather than just think because they’ve been with the same company for years, loyalty will work in their favour.

It won’t.

The same goes for energy suppliers who keep hiking their prices.

One brand recently offered 100 pounds to a customer who jumped to another supplier after a decade.

So it pays to swap companies, whether it’s energy, car insurance, or countless other necessary evils that drain our bank accounts every month.

For those of us who can’t be bothered to trawl through the assorted money-savings websites out there, the handy selection of reports in episode two of The Martin Lewis Money Show: Live should offer a ray of financial hope in the darkness.

Martin’s own website has been so popular over the years, there’s little wonder he’s become TV’s go-to guy when it comes to saving a few quid.

While some people set out to make their first million by a certain age, it’s remarkable that Mr Lewis has so little interest in cash (no pun intended).

“I certainly don’t preach about how to make money,” he explains.

“That’s not really my thing at all or my passion to be honest.”

Martin puts a lot of his success down to luck.

“I set up a website I believed in. It originally had no way of making money. I set up a business.

“I still don’t consider myself to be an entrepreneur. I’m somebody who set up a website and I consider myself to be a journalist and consumer campaigner.”

Because the website got so big, Lewis needed a way to fund his computer servers.

“I came up with the most ethical way I could think of to fund the site, and it did a lot better than I thought it would,” he confesses.

Martin adds: “I’m about providing information for consumers and fighting for consumer rights.

“I’m not about setting businesses up, and I think there are far more qualified people than me to talk about how to do that.

“I got lucky.”

Let’s hope some of that luck rubs off here as he and Angellica Bell unveil the latest deals of the week, along with more tips and tricks for making the most of your cash.
