Simmental females on offer at Dungannon

Catalogues are available for the Northern Ireland Simmental Cattle Breeders' Club's annual autumn show and sale which takes place at Dungannon Farmers' Mart on Friday 7th October.

The event has attracted an entry of 16 pedigree and 30 commercial females.

Judging commences at 10.30am, and is in the capable hands of Jonny Hazelton from the Ranfurly Herd in Dungannon. The sale will get underway at 1pm.

Club chairman Matthew Cunning said: “Prospective bidders are assured of quality and consistency, and can buy with confidence knowing that all pedigree and commercial cattle have been vaccinated for BVD, and pre-sale tested clear if the herd of origin is not accredited.

“Many of the pedigree females featured in the catalogue come from high health status herds, and the commercial females are all exhibitor-bred and have been inspected on-farm.”

He added: “The pedigree stock will be veterinary inspected on the morning of the sale, and sold under the auspices of the National Beef Association.”

The pedigree portion of the catalogue comprises of in-calf and maiden heifers, and includes a draft from Malachy Connolly’s Castlehill Herd based at Clogher. Consignors represented in the catalogue include: Ballymoney, Castlemount, Drumacritten, Kilmore, Stewartstown and Stralongford.

Matthew Cunning continued: “With rising overhead costs commercial suckler farmers are keen to take advantage of the Simmental breed’s dual purpose characteristics. The Simmental boasts tremendous maternal traits, giving it a competitive edge when it comes to profitability. Simmental females are fertile, docile, and have great mothering instincts, coupled with plenty of milk.”
