Behind the wheel of 510hp rear-wheel drive V8 super coupe

With 510hp, 516lb ft of torque and all the bells and whistles, the C63 S-based Edition 1 doesn’t so much offer an alternative to most of the established competition as annihilate it. The Lexus RC F Carbon and even the updated, uprated, 188kg-lighter BMW M4 Competition Package seem to be lacking a certain something compared with the Mercedes-AMG’s thunderous turbocharged V8, which makes the Edition 1’s £68,710 seem distinctly bargain priced.

With its moody matt grey paint, evocative V8 roar and distinctive yellow stripe, the coupe is a much more serious proposition than the C63 S saloon. That’s also thanks to the newly developed 12-link rear axle, which gives more rigidity and tuning control over chassis tuning and the car’s general character. Of course, we’re familiar with the 4.0-litre ‘hot-V’ V8, seven-speed auto-with-locking-clutch MCT transmission plus electronically controlled and fully variable locking diff.

The C63 S’s traction boost is a double-edged sword; that unreconstructed muscle-car feel is the AMG brand signature, but it can prove too brutish for those who prefer the sharper, more focused character of its M rival’s products. However, the diff adds refinement, ultimately making this super coupe quicker and its power more usable than before.

Its chassis dynamics are more focused than on the saloon or estate, with a sharper front end and more steering feel boosting confidence and enjoyment through fast corners. This adds poise to complement the traditional AMG firepower. The newly forced engine induction can be a little laggy, but once it gets going there’s much more mid-range than the previous 6.2 ever had. The V8 sounds fabulous, too.

Of the various drive modes, the default damper setting best balances ride and body control, giving superior composure to the M4’s. Teamed with the improved traction, it means a certain level of playfulness has been sacrificed, but it will still roar if you provoke it. The gearbox’s reactions can be a little inconsistent, although the Sport+ auto setting has well timed downshifts even if it somewhat lacks interaction.

The cabin gets the usual luxury appointments plus some Edition 1 extras, but a few fit and finish issues don’t reflect the price or badge, while the tablet screen could be better.

With its huge performance, poised dynamics and characterful feel, the new C63 S shows a new-found maturity. It’s crazy side still shows through, though – and that’s what we love about it.
