On Tuesday morning, Laura Humphries, who works at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald posted a message on social media after she finished a long and demanding shift.

“If you still think Covid is a hoax or some conspiracy b******t, come spend a 12 hour night shift in ICU,” she said.

“Pure pandemonium and things are only set to get worse.

“Just a few of the staff that were on last night. We Nailed it guys. Great work.”

The message went viral within a few hours and has been shared almost 300 times on Facebook.

People started to leave comments reacting to the post.

“You guys are friggin awesome and deserve medals for the brilliant jobs you all do - thank you for all you do,” said one woman.

“You are all doing amazing work, and while I hope I never have to see you face to face in your work place, I also feel very relieved to know that there are wonderful people like you there for us all in our time of need,” added another.

The post came on the same day the Chair of British Medical Association (BMA) said the health service in Northern Ireland is “hanging by a thread”.

Dr. Tom Black said he was “facing down the politicians” during an interview on The Stephen Nolan Show on BBC Radio Ulster on Tuesday morning.

Northern Ireland is currently more than half way through a four week long ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown however, Dr. Black says it does not go far enough.

Dr. Black said “we need a full lockdown” and warned if one was not forthcoming it would result in doctors having to make calls on who to treat and who to not.

Dr. Black’s warning is completely at odds with the outlook of First Minister, Arlene Foster, who has already committed to lifting the ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown on November 13.

“Why are we indulging in wishful thinking?

“We need a lockdown like the one that’s coming in England and like the one in the Republic of Ireland.

“The health-service here is hanging by a thread and unless we do something now we run the risk that our hospitals will buckle under the pressure because we don’t have enough beds.

“Why do we think we are special?

“We need leadership,” said Dr. Black.
