Three major NI hospitals are now over capacity as DoH records 16 additional Covid-19 deaths

The DoH defines a Covid-19 related death as one that occurs in a person within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

Thirteen of the deaths recorded yesterday occurred in the last 24 hours while three did not occur but were officially recorded for the first time within that time.

The 16 deaths were recorded in the following local council areas: Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (five); Antrim and Newtownabbey (one); Mid and East Antrim (one); Mid Ulster (two); Causeway, Coast and Glens (one); Derry and Strabane (two); Newry, Mourne and Down (two) and Ards (two).

Eight of the people to die were male and eight were female.

One person aged between 40 and 59 was one of those to die; three were aged between 60 and 79 and 12 were 80 or over.

Eleven of the deaths occurred in a hospital setting and five occurred in a residential/care home setting.

The DoH also recorded an additional 973 new infections in the last 24 hours.

Although still considered high by health chiefs the infection rate is showing signs of slowing down.

It means the total number of infections in Northern Ireland since the beginning of the pandemic to be 92,782.

Three hospitals in Northern Ireland, namely Altnagelvin Area Hospital; the Ulster Hospital and the Antrim Hospital, are operating at above capacity however across Northern Ireland the hospital bed capacity is 96 per cent.

There are 19 (850) fewer people with Covid-19 in intensive care unit (ICU) beds than yesterday.
