Twelve new Covid-19 related deaths recorded in NI in last 24 hours - bed capacity down to 95% across Northern Ireland

Twelve additional Covid-19 related deaths have been recorded by the Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Ireland in the last 24 hours.

The DoH defines a Covid-19 related death as a death occurring within 28 days of an individual being diagnosed with the virus.

This data from the DoH takes the total Covid-19 death-toll in Northern Ireland since the beginning of the pandemic to 974.

Nine of the deaths recorded in the last 24 hours also occurred within this time frame while the remaining three deaths were first recorded in the 24 hours to 10.00am on Friday.

Nine of the deaths occurred in hospitals in Northern Ireland while the remaining three individuals passed away in a residential/care home facility.

Of the 12 deaths, eight individuals were female and four were male.

One of the deaths was that of person aged between 40-59; four aged between 60-79 and seven aged 80 or older.

The 12 deaths occurred in the following local government districts: Belfast City Council (two); Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (two); Antrim and Newtownabbey (one); Lisburn and Castlereagh (two); Causeway, Coast and Glens (two); Newry, Mourne and Down (one) and Ards and North Down (two).

The DoH recorded fewer new infections in the last 24 hours (391) than it did the previous 24 hours (442).

It takes the total number of individuals to test positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic to 51,109.

There were six fewer people (425) in hospitals in Northern Ireland with Covid-19 than there were 24 hours ago (431).

However, there are two fewer (17) unoccupied intensive care unit (ICU) beds in Northern Ireland than there was 24 hours ago (19).

This data from DoH also shows there are currently 118 ICU beds in Northern Ireland - 37 beds are occupied by patients with Covid-19 and 64 are occupied by patients with non-Covid conditions.

The current hospital bed capacity in Northern Ireland is running at 95 per cent - this is a significant decrease as for weeks the health service here was reporting more than 100 per cent bed capacity every day.
