The Grand Master of the Orange Order has given an address in which he called for planning to begin right away on how to celebrate the centenary of Northern Ireland’s existence next year.

On May 3, 1921, the Government of Ireland Act became law, effectively ceding the southern 26 states (including Donegal) and establishing Northern Ireland as an official entity.

Edward Stevenson made the comments in an online address, as part of the stay-at-home celebrations today.

He said: “I welcome you to our online Boyne anniversary platform proceedings today.

“We’re not on the back of a flat bed lorry. We’re not speaking to local lodges and bands gathered around the platform.

“Rather, through social media and Radio Boyne, we’re addressing the Orange family around the world.”

He said he was giving his address during “that part of the day when you would’ve arrived at the field – you’re resting your feet, enjoying the craic with your brethren, and have dined royally on sandwiches and scalding tea”.

He went on to add: “This year has been a different Twelfth, for the sake of everyone’s health.

“God willing, next year we will be able to celebrate in our traditional manner with our parades and events – not only celebrate the Glorious Revolution and the freedoms that flowed from it, but next year 2021 we will celebrate the centenary of Northern Ireland.

“I would encourage one and all to begin to plan to make 2021 a momentous year-long celebration.

“The traditional farewell at this point is ‘safe home’.

“However, as you are at home, can I wish one and all that you enjoy the rest of the day - and stay safe, until we meet again.”
