The Meat Merchant in Moira, Co Armagh, a butchery and food store owned by Peter Hannan of Hannan Meats, among the best known and most respected personalities in the UK food industry, has just launched the home delivery service for meats long preferred by top chefs in the UK, Ireland, France, Portugal and Hong Kong.

The new service is a significant expansion of the retail operation as a key part of the award winning company’s response to the severe challenges from successive coronavirus lockdowns to meat sales to top hotels and restaurants in its main markets.

The Meat Merchant shop, which shares the same site as Hannan Meats outside Moira, is now reaching out to consumers offering hampers packed with premium meats, a new direction for the innovation-led business. Among the first to welcome the initiative is renowned food writer Tom Parker Bowles, a regular contributor to the Mail on Sunday and other top foodie and culinary publications.

The range of hampers features Hannan’s renowned Himalayan salt aged beef and lamb and sugar-pit bacon. The beefy hampers are ordered from its recently launched e-commerce site for delivery throughout the UK, Ireland and even further afield.

While the service has been launched in time for Christmas dinner, the company plans to develop it as a long-term option that could help expand its export sales.

David Rosbotham, general manager of Hannan Meats, explaining the retail expansion, says: “Our new Hannan Hampers are aimed at those who can’t get into our shop in Moira. While calling into the shop to select from our full range is still the best method, this isn’t possible for many people, especially those in Great Britain who’ve heard about our meats through newspapers, magazines and broadcasters, to make it to us, we are now bringing our range of premium meats right to their doorstep.

“The move is strongly influenced by the growing numbers of people throughout the UK keen to enjoy delicious meats which have won more Great Taste Awards for premium quality and outstanding flavours than any other food company in the UK.

“We’ve been fielding calls and emails from people in Britain and indeed further afield about the availability of our meats outside Northern Ireland over many years. We are now set up to provide this potentially very important service through our new e-commerce site. Customers will be able to choose from a range of hampers with product options especially for Christmas. But Hannan Hampers aren’t just for Christmas. They’ll be available to be enjoyed anytime of the year.”

The company is initially offering a limited quantity and selection of hampers comprising of some of its most popular and multi-award winning meats. “It’s a first step which we intend to develop in the months and years ahead,” David continues.

“The hampers will contain meats that we know customers will enjoy. Everything is packed for convenience and suitable for home freezing.”

The hampers will also be available in the Republic of Ireland through the longstanding partnership between Hannan Meats and James Whelan Butchers of Clonmel in Tipperary, one of the most successful butchery businesses in the Republic. Hannan already supplies meat such as its much lauded Glenarm Himalayan salt aged beef to the butchery business which has 10 outlets across the Republic including counters at Dunnes Stores in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

The Meat Merchant butchery and food store is among the most innovative meat operations on the island of Ireland. Hannan Meats has been a major supplier of a wide range of quality meats to hospitality throughout the UK and Europe for over 30 years.

The shop was established to enable meat enthusiasts here to buy similar products chosen by top chefs in the UK, the Republic and other parts of Europe. It has proved an exceptional success here.

Hannan Meats, a Food NI member company, pioneered the ageing of premium meat using a special chamber of huge salt blocks from the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan and has also led the way in curing pork in a special sugar pit.

In addition to marketing its own meats and most recently the company’s quality sauces, the Meat Merchant has been a long-time supporter of artisan foods from other producers in Northern Ireland. Many artisan food enterprises have begun their retail journey to success with a first listing at the shop.
