A 13-storey block of flats in the Carlisle Development Scheme, the first to be undertaken by Belfast Corporation, was opened formally yesterday by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Martin Wallace.

The Lord Mayor said that when the present site was fully developed it would contain six blocks of 13-storey flats similar to the one now completed. Each of these blocks would contain 50 dwellings.

“I have been most impressed,” said the Lord Mayor, “by the fact that the year 1961-62, despite the acute shortage of skilled labour and technical staff, has been a period of exceptional progress.

“It is fully anticipated that during this period, 700 dwellings will be completed by the Corporation – more than double the number completed in the previous year.

“All this has been achieved against the background of an acute shortage of building sites.”

The rents of the two-bedroom flats in the 13-storey building – Alanbrooke House – will be 35s per week, plus rates, amounting to 43s 5d. For the one-room flat, it will be 32s, plus rates, which is 39s 8d.
