Reported in the News Letter on October 31, 1955: War orphans treated to fun, food and fireworks

More than 100 children enjoyed a “war orphans” party, organised by the Northern Ireland Disabled Ex-Servicemen’s Association, which was held in the Park Lodge Home for Boys, Antrim Road, Belfast, on Saturday [October 29].

Included in the total number of children present were 28 war orphans who are cared for by the Ministry of Pensions, and children from Glendhu Children’s Hostel, Nazareth House, Nazareth Lodge, and Park Lodge.

The children were entertained to a film show and a fireworks display. They also enjoyed a variety programme, including Bob McCormick (ventriloquist), Kathleen Benson (singer), and a troupe of Irish dancers.

All the gifts and prizes, together with large quantities of ice cream, minerals, fruit and nuts, and the entire supper, were given free by Belfast stores and companies.
