The funeral has taken place for a tragic eight-year-old who died after becoming entangled in a cord from a blind or curtain.

Brendan Allister, from Ballykinlar in Co Down, died on Sunday.

The primary five pupil at Our Lady and St Patrick’s Primary School in Downpatrick is survived by his parents Roisin and David, brother Tiarnan, sister Tara and wider family circle.

His funeral was held on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Dundrum.

“The town is really grief-stricken and shocked as the family are so well known and respected.”

A PSNI spokeswoman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

In recent years a number of children have died in Northern Ireland after accidents involving blind cords. In November 2013 a 21-month-old baby girl died in a blind cord accident at her home in Comber, Co Down.
