Barra McGrory expected to step down as head of PPS

Barra McGrory has been in post since 2011.

Although nothing official has been announced by the PPS, it is understood that details will emerge tomorrow (Wednesday).

His expected departure comes following intense criticism from unionists of decisions taken by the PPS – in particular, the recent decision to pursue former soldier Dennis Hutchings through the courts for a 1974 killing.

The PPS is continuing to pursue an attempted murder charge against him, despite a judge having said that he should only face an attempted grievous bodily harm charge in relation to the shooting of John Pat Cunningham.

The PPS has said: “All decisions are taken in strict accordance with the PPS Code for Prosecutors...

“While there has been some political commentary over the recent period, political considerations play no part in any decision taken by the PPS. “Our decision-making is fair, independent and impartial and is not influenced by improper or undue pressure from any source, in line with the Code for Prosecutors.”

Reports of Mr McGrory’s pending departure began circulating on Tuesday night.

It comes only a week after Mr McGrory appeared on the BBC for a half-hour long interview (in Irish), where he discussed things such as his background, Pat Finucane, the prosecution of soldiers, and more.
