A Dungannon chippy has ‘netted’ first ‘plaice’ as the top fish and chip shop in Northern Ireland, as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards.

The Dolphin Takeaway is now set to ‘batter’ it out against the nine other regional winners from around the UK, as they vie for the ultimate title – the ‘best fish and chip shop’ in the UK.

Owner of the Dolphin Takeaway, Malachy Mallon, said: “The news is just mind-blowing, our wee chippy in Co Tyrone is No 1 in Northern Ireland!

“We’re absolutely ecstatic to have netted the regional winner’s title and I’m thrilled for our hardworking staff. It will be a great honour and privilege to represent the Province at the big UK showdown in January.”

Mr Mallon said the awards “have been a massive gateway to success for us” making the shop “a destination takeaway” and “on the map as one of the top 10 finest in the UK”.

He added they were “bracing” themselves “for fierce competition”.

“Any chippy that makes it to this stage in such a prestigious national contest is a force to be reckoned with, but we will definitely give it our best battering,” he added.

Paul Williams, chief executive of organisers Seafish, said: “The aim of the National Fish & Chip Awards has always been to showcase the very best fish and chip businesses and individuals in the UK while setting incredibly high standards for the industry.

“The Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award is one of the highest honours to receive as a fish and chip business. Many of our past winners and finalists have gone on to reap substantial benefits, including international fame through industry trips overseas, increased shop footfall and turnover and even launching their own products.”

Mr Williams added: “We’ve had so many excellent shops come through for each stage of the competition this year and the final 10 really do excel in upholding the high standards we set.

“I’d like to offer up my congratulations and wish them the best as they prepare to continue their quest towards becoming the new champion, but also thank them for consistently helping us to reinforce the UK’s reputation as the home of the world’s best fish and chips.”

The awards ceremony will take place at The Lancaster London Hotel on January 20.
