One of Belfast’s best-known fast food outlets has changed hands along with the chain in a seven figure deal.
Founded in 2007 in Belfast by John and Karen Blisard Boojum has grown to become the leading burrito brand in Ireland, with restaurants in Belfast, Dublin and Galwayserving award-winning burritos, tacos, salads and rice bowls to thousands of customers every day.
Now Belfast brothers David and Andrew Maxwell have purchased the business with the aim of expanding further.
“Boojum is one of the most exciting and dynamic restaurant concepts to hit Ireland in recent times,”said David Maxwell.
“We’re excited about the brand and the excellent opportunities to expand throughout Ireland and the UK over the coming years.”
Joining David in the venture is his brother and former Ulster rugby player Andrew.
“Boojum is synonymous with Mexican cuisine in Ireland and we’re keen to bring Boojum’s fantastic offerings to thousands more new customers in the very near future,” he said.
The purchase of Boojum is the pinnacle of a combined 30 years in the UK and US restaurant industry for the pair brothers David and Andrew.
“I was privileged to spend 11 unbelievable years as part of my restaurant career in Arizona, where I fell in love with Mexican food and culture,” said David.
“Andrew joined me in 2008 after a successful career at Ulster Rugby.
“We both feel a huge amount of synergy with Boojum, and when the opportunity arose wefelt it was right for us and our families.”
The deal was supported by business advisors HNH whose managing director Craig Holmes hailed it as a positive development for the brothers and the businestated: “HNH was delighted to work with a quality MBI team and pleased to attract a quality Private Equity investor in Renatus Capital to support both the acquisition of the business and the Company’s future growth ambitions.”
“Boojum is a strong brand in the Irish fast casual food market and we believe it is poised for further growth under the new management. HNH is working with companies in different sectors to attract Private Equity for growth or realisation, and that bodes well for the Northern Ireland economy.”
David Maxwell is looking forward to working with the talented team at Boojum.“The management and crew at Boojum provide exceptional service. We expect to buildon that and create many new jobs as part of our expansion plans in both the north and south. We will continue to source and use only the best local suppliers and companies out there to maintain Boojum as one of the shining lights of the Irish restaurant industry.”
Mark Flood, who co-founded Renatus with Brendan Traynor said, “We are very excited that Boojum is our first acquisition. Boojum has the best Mexican food offering in Ireland. It is a unique and energetic brand. The Maxwell brothers and the existing management will combine to make a first-class team to run the company. We are looking forward to becoming part of the Boojum success story and helping to grow the business.”
