Northern Ireland’s butchers have a chance to go head to head for honours with the launch of the first ever Ulster Sausage & Burger Competition which will see top performers awarded for the quality of their produce.

The Butchery Excellence Scheme (BES) announced details of the event which is open to all independent butchers in Ulster, including border counties, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan.

Entrants will compete across a number of categories including ‘traditional beef sausage’, ‘speciality sausage’, ‘beef burger’, and ‘steak burger’.

“The Butchery Excellence Scheme launched just nine months ago, and since then, we have grown to over 75 members and hope to pass the 100 mark within the next few months,” said BES founder Rhonda Montgomery.

“From our knowledge of butchers’ shops and the fine products they are supplying, we felt that it was time to showcase the best butcher shops in the land and really put them on the map.

“We would encourage butchers shops across Ulster to take part as this is an opportunity to showcase their produce at a national level and secure a third party stamp of approval.

The event is on March 12 at CAFRE Loughry Campus. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.butcheryexcellencescheme.com.
