The appearance of a republican gunman on the streets of Londonderry on Wednesday night must be investigated by the police, a DUP MLA has said.
Gary Middleton was commenting after an INLA member fired shots over the coffin of hunger striker Patsy O’Hara’s mother Peggy. The incident is reported to have taken place outside her Templegrove home in the Buncrana Road area shortly before 8pm.
Other INLA men and women, dressed in white shirts and black trousers, had formed a guard of honour for the 86-year-old who died on Monday morning.
Patsy O’Hara, 23, died in the Maze in 1981 after 61 days of refusing food.
Mr Middleton said: “The PSNI must take action against those involved in the dissident republican act of terror tonight. It is unacceptable that masked gunmen are brandishing weapons and firing shots in broad daylight on our streets. It’s evident from several photographs that an elected representative was also in attendance during this display of terrorism. I trust Londonderry and Strabane council will investigate the councillor.”
