Co Fermanagh road crash victim died just yards from home

A man who died following a collision in Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh yesterday has been named locally as Edward McConnell.

McConnell, aged in his 30s, was the driver of a Volkswagen car that was involved in a single vehicle collision in Fortview Park around 5pm.

It is understood the incident occurred just yards from the victim’s home, which he shared with his mother.

Mr McConnell’s death is especially tragic, as it comes almost a year after his father – also named Edward – passed away following a battle with cancer.

Enniskillen Councillor Robert Irvine, who knew the family, said the local community was in a state of shock following news of Mr McConnell’s death.

The UUP representative added: “Lisbellaw is a very close knit community. Edward was well known and well liked in the local area. He was a quiet, hard-working lad who had lots of friends.

“This family has already suffered a tragedy in the past year and people were devastated to learn of the death of this young man in such tragic circumstances.”

Edward is survived by his mother Deborah and two older sisters.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact local officers in Enniskillen or the Collision Investigation Unit by calling 101.

The Tattymacall Road has been reopened to traffic following the PSNI investigation into the crash.

Mr McConnell is the third person to lose his life on Ulster roads in as many days. Patrick James McGeough, aged 79, from the Monaghan area died in an accident on the A3 Cavan Road, near Newtownbutler in Fermanagh on Saturday.

A second man in his 40s died in a separate crash on the Clooney Road in Londonderry on Sunday morning.
