Creggan Shooting: '˜Nothing but a gang of thugs'

The people responsible for shooting a man in Creggan on Monday night have been branded as 'nothing but a gang of thugs' by a local resident.

The man, in his twenties, was shot twice in the leg and was treated for his injuries in Altnagelvin Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

A spokesperson for the Royal Victoria Hospital told the ‘Journal’ that man was still in a critical condition.

The man was shot shortly before 9p.m. on Monday. A puddle of blood marks the spot on the road where the man was shot. The shooting occurred in a residential area.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said the shooting took place in the middle of a street while children played nearby.

“It’s absolutely despicable what happened,” said the resident.

“This is a new estate and I thought that by moving here we would never come face to face with this kind of incident.

“The people who did this are nothing but a gang of thugs - when will they learn that the vast majority of the community do not want them here anymore. It’s time to move on,” she added.

There is still a significant Police Service of Northern Ireland (P.S.N.I.) presence at the scene of the shooting.

P.S.N.I. Inspector, Alison Ferguson, is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact Detectives in Strand Road on 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
