Detectives investigating a violent aggravated burglary in Bessbrook on Monday have arrested two people.

A 25-year-old female and 26-year-old male were arrested by officers earlier today in the Newry area, on suspicion of attempted murder.

The pair are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The victim, in his 70s, sustained serious injuries in the attack at his home in Clogharevan Park, Bessbrook.

PSNI Detective Inspector David Henderson said: “The elderly, vulnerable victim of this horrendous crime was in bed at around 2.30am on Monday morning when three men burst into his room.

“They ransacked the bedroom and attacked him with a sharp implement, possibly a hook.”

He sustained multiple serious stab wounds and was left in a critical condition in hospital.

Police have heard from several witnesses who were in the area at the time and appealed to speak to others.
