Bogus police officer in failed Portadown robbery

Two men in their 20s, one dressed in police uniform and the other carrying a suspected firearm, have fled empty-handed after a robbery attempt in Co Armagh.

Around 10.10am on Thursday, the pair entered a shop in Portadown’s West Street while a third man may have been waiting in a getaway car – a blue Toyota Avensis registration number JHZ 1307 which was later found at the Fairgreen car park.

One jumped over the counter and wrestled with a shop worker as his accomplice tried to push another member of staff into a storeroom.

The man carrying the firearm is described as wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms and a waterproof two tone black/charcoal grey jacket.

Detective Inspector Keith Gawley said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have seen the vehicle travelling between West Street and where it was abandoned in Fairgreen carpark to contact detectives at Lurgan police station on the non-emergency number 101.

“Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in and around Fairgreen carpark before 11.30am or shortly afterwards to also contact police. If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
