Rape victim Mairia Cahill said that so-called IRA psychiatrists – who would be present during republican kangaroo courts – involved female IRA members “who had been sent on Mickey Mouse counselling courses”.

In Tuesday night’s BBC Spotlight programme, Paudie McGahon told how he was introduced to an IRA psychiatrist during the ‘court proceedings’ which took place in the very room where he claimed he had been raped by an IRA man.

Ms Cahill told the News Letter she was aware of such IRA psychiatrists – but claimed these were IRA women who “talked to some victims and then sent that information straight back to the IRA”.

Meanwhile, Ms Cahill said she “did not regret for one second” waiving her right to anonymity through BBC Spotlight last year.

She said since her case became known “people have been in contact with me and people are hugely distressed by t he continued denials from Sinn Fein” that sexual abuse took place.

She said she “could not put a figure on the number of sexual abuse victims (in the IRA) because it is changing all the time”.

“If you take over 30 names were handed to the Gardai,” she said. “And if you take the perpetrator does not usually abuse once, but there is usually a significant number of victims.”
