A young child has allegedly been held hostage in a tiger kidnap-style robbery attempt in east Belfast.
The incident unfolded when a man was placing his child in the back of his car outside the Castlerobin area of Castlereagh.
It is understood that when he got into the driver’s seat he was approached by a man who punched him through the open window.
The assailant then told the man to drive his Green VW Golf to Dublin Street off the Ravenhill Road.
He was then instructed to enter a Post Office with a bag and demand money while the suspect remained in the car with the child.
When the victim returned to the car the suspect was gone but his child remained in the car. The infant was unharmed during Thursday morning’s incident.
The man also told police that during the incident the suspect poured an unknown liquid over him.
PSNI Detective Inspector Harry Colgan said: “While the suspect did not take any money this was a despicable act carried out by someone with absolutely no regard for the safety of the victim or his child and we would appeal for anyone who was in in the Castlerobin area and saw or heard any suspicious activity to contact detectives on the non-emergency number 101.
“Or if anyone would like to pass information without passing their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
