A young farmer who was accused of causing a fatal car crash has had the charges against him dropped.

Stephen Hamilton, 23, had been scheduled to have his case committal hearing at Antrim Magistrates’ Court, but instead a prosecuting lawyer said the case had been reviewed and was being withdrawn.

Accordingly, District Judge Alan White dismissed the charges alleging Hamilton caused the death of Michelle Hulford and grievous bodily injury to Maureen Grant and Rosemary Sands by driving carelessly on the Ballymena Road in Doagh on July 9 2012.

Previous courts have heard that two senior prosecuting lawyers had opted not to prosecute Hamilton, from the Deerpark Road in Doagh, Co Antrim, on the grounds that his driving “did not fall below the standard expected of a careful and competent driver”.

Miss Hulford, a 21-year-old student from Luton, died as a result of the injuries she sustained when the car she was in was involved in a collision with an agricultural vehicle close to Hamilton’s home.
