Two men were arrested in Belfast city centre this afternoon in connection with what police described as “a vicious assault” during which a male cyclist was kicked off his bike and punched and kicked while on the ground.

The cyclist sustained a head injury during the incident, which occurred shortly before 2.30pm near the junction of Waring Street and Victoria Street.

The two men, aged 22 and 28, were detained on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent. They remain in custody and are said to be assisting police with their enquiries.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, Inspector David McBride commented: “This was a vicious assault and I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around this time and saw what happened to contact us. I would also appeal to any driver in the area at the time who has a dash cam fitted to their vehicle to check their footage.

“Anyone with information is asked to call us on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number 754 of 06/08/18.”
