Device found in Newry alert had exploded

A security alert in Newry proved to be a viable explosive device which had detonated, police have said.

ATO were tasked to examine a suspicious object earlier today on the Barracric Road, resulting in the closure of the railway line between Newry and Dundalk.

Police said tonight that the alert had now ended and confirmed that a viable explosive device had detonated in the area.

Parts of what is believed to be remnants of the device have been taken away for further examination.

No damage was caused and there have been no reports of any injuries as a result of the explosion.

The railway line has reopened.

Police thanked the public for their cooperation during the operation and appealed for anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.
