Father’s fears after teenage son threatened by dissident republicans

The father of a teenager under threat from dissident republicans has said his family is living in fear.

The 15-year-old from Omagh, Co Tyrone, was warned of the threat just over a week ago but, his father, who declined to be named, said they had no idea why has been targeted.

He said: “It is an awful thing to have hanging over your head. We just don’t know what to do. It is really frightening.”

He claimed police officers said they had intelligence about a threat against the teen but could not confirm details about its nature or severity.

The boy’s father added: “He is 15 years of age. I know where he is at almost every second of the day.

“He goes to school and comes home. He doesn’t go to discos or anything like that at the weekend. He is not involved in anything.

“I just don’t know why he has been singled out.

“It is a genuine threat from dissident republicans. We are taking it seriously and I want it lifted immediately.

“But, we don’t know what kind of threat it is. The police didn’t give us any details. I think they should be able to tell us a bit more.”

The PSNI has said it cannot discuss individual cases.

A spokeswoman said: “We do not discuss the security of individuals. However, if we receive information that a person’s life may be at risk we will inform them accordingly. We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk.”

Sinn Fein MLA Declan McAleer, who knows the family, described the threat as reprehensible and has called for the police to review how they deal with such threats.

He said: “I visited the young fellow and his family and they are extremely concerned and have absolutely no idea why he has been singled out in this way.

“It is reprehensible that a child should be singled out in this way and I am calling on whoever issued the threat to lift it immediately.

“The family have sought legal advice but feel very much ‘in limbo’.”
