Former Derry GAA star John McGurk charged with £572,000 theft

A former All-Ireland GAA champion has been ordered to stand trial accused of stealing almost £600,000 from his employer.

Accountant John Malachy McGurk, 49, was charged at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court with a single count of theft by employee in that he allegedly stole £572,206 from his employers at Kilrea Quarry Patrick Bradley Ltd.

McGurk, who won an All-Ireland title with Derry and who is from Oakland Crescent in Knockloughrim, Magherafelt, was further charged with 36 counts of committing fraud on various dates between July 1 2006 and December 31 2011.

McGurk was released on his own bail of £750, granted legal aid and ordered to appear before Antrim Crown Court on November 19 for his arraignment.
