Investigation launched after dog allegedly beaten in Newtownabbey

The incident in the Carnmoney Road area of the borough is under investigation and the local authority is appealing for anyone with information about it to come forward.

In a post on social media on Friday (June 19), an Antrim and Newtownabbey Council spokesperson said: “Our Animal Welfare officer attended the Carnmoney Road area of Glengormley, this afternoon, assisted by PSNI, following a report of a dog being beaten.

“This dog is now in council care. We would appeal for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with further information to contact the council’s Animal Welfare service.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police attended the Carnmoney Road area of Glengormley on Friday afternoon (June 19) after receiving a report of animal cruelty and conducted initial enquiries.

“The matter has now been referred to the council’s Animal Welfare officer.”

Providing an update today (Monday), a council spokesperson said: “This alleged incident is currently under investigation, so we are unable to comment further. If anyone has any relevant information, please contact the council’s Animal Welfare service via 028 25 633134 quoting reference NR/2020/2476.”
