A north Belfast man allegedly stole more than £1,000 in cash during an armed raid on a Poundstretcher store, a court heard on Friday.

Christopher Ross is also accused of seizing vouchers from the branch in Newtownabbey while armed with a knife on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old, of Glenbank Drive in the city, was granted bail but banned from a surrounding shopping centre.

Ross appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with robbing Poundstretcher on Longwood Road of £1,075 in cash and £125 in vouchers.

A detective confirmed he is to be further charged with possessing an offensive weapon, namely a knife, in connection with the same incident.

A defence lawyer said Ross sustained a brain injury up to seven years ago which left him suffering from epilepsy.

Ross is to return to court for his next appearance on January 21.
