A man has been arrested on suspicion of producing a gun inside a Belfast hospital.
The 26-year-old was detained in the Accident and Emergency department of the Royal Victoria Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The incident unfolded in a toilet facility in the waiting room.
It is understood the suspect was taken into custody after a period of negotiation with staff and police officers.
A spokesman for Belfast Health and Social Care Trust said: “We can confirm that our security staff and the PSNI responded to an incident in the waiting area of the emergency department last night. A person was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered.”
PSNI Inspector Paul Noble said: “Police arrested a 26-year-old man in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 18 March, at a hospital on the Grosvenor Road, Belfast, on suspicion of possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances.”
