A man shot in the head at a north Belfast hot food bar is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.
The incident took place on Oldpark Road and the gunman is thought to have fled the scene in a blue Vauxhall estate car later found burned out in nearby Torrens Gardens.
North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds said there was “widespread shock” in the area following the incident. “This incident has been deeply disturbing for the settled community on this part of the Oldpark Road,” he said.
Mr Dodds added: “Murderous attacks such as this are the last thing we want to see happening on the streets of north Belfast.
“This incident has been deeply disturbing for the settled community on this part of the Oldpark Road.”
Sinn Fein’s Gerry Kelly condemned the hot food bar shooting, as well as punishment-style attack in the New Lodge area later in the evening.
“This evening’s shootings in the Old Park and New Lodge areas have left one man in a critical condition and another man injured. These attacks are wrong and must be condemned. There can be no place for these type of actions in our community.”
Mr Kelly said those responsible were “criminals” and added: “I am calling on those behind these attacks to catch themselves on, listen to the will of the local communities who want to move in and stop these actions immediately.”
Andy Allen, the Ulster Unionist Party’s north Belfast spokesperson, said: “This evening we have seen two shootings within a matter of hours. Those who bring guns onto our streets are not welcome - their actions are nothing short of cowardly.
“I would urge anyone with any information that would help to bring the perpetrators of this cowardly attack to justice to contact the PSNI directly, or to do so anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
