A man is “stable in intensive care” in Craigavon Area Hospital after he fell down a manhole and into a sewer.
The incident happened on the Rathfriland Road in Banbridge, Co Down, around 2pm on Monday.
A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Nine fire appliances and the NIFRS Specialist Rescue Team were deployed to the scene following a report that a man had collapsed at the bottom of a manhole.”
The spokesman said three firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the man from the manhole using working at height equipment along with their colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
“The man was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel,” he said.
The man, understood to be a contractor and aged in his 20s, was initially taken to Daisy Hill Hospital before being transferred to Craigavon Area Hospital. A PSNI spokeswoman said traffic diversions were put in place during the operation.
